Re Names Kenneth Kurtzman
Chief Risk Officer
Re is excited to welcome Kenneth Kurtzman as chief risk officer.
Ken brings more than 35 years of experience across actuarial work, underwriting, and risk management. He joins Re from an independent consulting practice, where he advised insurers on reserving, reinsurance, and business strategy.
Prior to that, Ken worked for three years as VP of reinsurance and risk management at NEXT Insurance. His duties involved purchasing reinsurance, developing the firm’s enterprise risk management framework, and overseeing capital management and reserving. He also helped establish Forward Re, a reinsurance subsidiary based in the Cayman Islands, and served on its board.
Before joining NEXT, Ken spent nine years as executive vice president and chief risk officer at Platinum Underwriters Reinsurance Group, where he oversaw property catastrophe, casualty, and asset risk. Earlier in his career, he spent nine years at Swiss Re, one of the world’s leading reinsurers, serving in senior roles in property and casualty risk management and underwriting.
Ken is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) and a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst (CERA).
Ken’s Role at Re
As chief risk officer, Ken will oversee risk management for Re’s reinsurance business (Cover Re). He’ll be responsible for determining the types and magnitude of reinsurance risk Re is prepared to underwrite, while also overseeing capital management. Finally, Ken will be responsible for identifying and monitoring potential risks to Re at large and reporting upon them to company leadership.
“The reinsurers that last for decades are the ones that know exactly how much risk they can take on and when to walk away, and that’s the kind of reinsurer we’re building. Ken has spent his career holding that line, and having him here means Re is set up to grow for the long haul, not just the next cycle.”
